Chemical Scalp Burn Following Sodium Hydroxide Spill

Patient History

Patient presented with a chemical burn after spilling a bucket of lye (sodium hydroxide) on his head, chest and face during a work accident.

Treatment

In the operating room, the wound was debrided. Restrata MiniMatrix™ was applied followed by Restrata Meshed.

Conclusion

By Week 2 post-application, the Restrata was almost entirely resorbed, and a healthy granulation base had formed. A split-thickness skin graft (STSG) was originally planned for this patient, but the granulation base was so healthy that they were left to close via secondary intent.

Restrata has not been studied in wounds that extend into the tendon, muscle, joint capsule, or bone. Restrata should not be applied in any case until excessive exudate, bleeding, acute swelling, and infection is controlled. Please refer to the Instructions for Use for a full list of indications, contraindications, precautions, and warnings.
